East of the Sun and West of the Moon comprises fifteen stoic and moving Norwegian Folktales. In this tale, Nature itself is a character, alternately glooming and glowing. The work by Kay Neilson inspired this knitwear project. His figures are stereotypically Nordic, pale and idealized, somewhat androgynous. The tale follows a beautiful young girl and a tragically handsome prince who is cursed to appear as a white bear until the curse is broken. Other characters who appear in the tale are the East, West and South Winds, who help the young girl on her long journey to find the prince and break the curse which will save him from marrying the Troll Princess.
