This design was inspired by the novel, “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, as well as Icelandic river deltas. Aerial images of this natural phenomenon capture the runoff from melting glaciers forming a maze of rivers, running over a bed of volcanic ash and sand. This inspired the way in which the fabric was manipulated using the white plastic, and black fabric.
Paulo Coelho writes about ‘personal legends’, which serve as the only means by which an individual can live a satisfying life. The universe can only achieve perfection if all natural things continuously undergo a cycle of achieving their personal legend.
We must coax plastic to achieve its own personal legend. Plastic is a design failure; therefore, we as humans must complete its final goal in synchronizing the economic system of humankind with the ecosystem of nature. This garment was made using black lace, a black mesh, weaved with strips of black silk chiffon bias strips, and repurposed plastic bags. Each fabric is woven with strips of plastic bags and black silk chiffon.
